Letzte Woche hat der Baselbieter Landrat zwar knapp aber trotzdem die Rauchstopp-Inititiative angenommen. Es wird nun zur Volksabstimmung kommen. Hat dieser Entscheid erstaunlich lange gebraucht. Hoffentlich können wir dann wenigstens sagen: “was lange währt, wird endlich gut….”!

Schande über mich…..! Habe ich doch nun Wochenlang nicht mehr geschrieben…. Shit happens! A prospos “shit happens”:

Heute fand die Promotionsfeier der Medizinischen Fakultät Basel statt. Ich genoss den Anlass und war erfreut über die vielen jungen “Doktorinnen” und “Doktoren”. Da waren auch zwei ehemalige Studentinnen dabei, deren Dissertation ich mitbetreuen durfte. Es ist toll zu sehen, wie diese Leute nach all ihrer Arbeit Ihren “Lohn” sprich Doktortitel erhalten dürfen….. Und da war noch mein Husten -ich kann es nicht lassen; komm nochmals mit Husten - Ich bin so richtig erklätet. Ich versuchte so gut ich konnte, meinen Husten zu unterdrücken und doch ging es nicht immer… Dabei wurde mir mal wieder bewusst, wie störend und sicher auch die lebensqualität-einschränkend Husten sein kann. Was braucht es für rauchfreie Restaurants? Man sammelt einfach die Aschenbecher ein und die Gäste geniessen rauchfrei das Essen und Trinken. “Simple as that”! Und dafür braucht man nun in Basel über ein Jahr??? Die Gesundheitsligen sind mit Recht enttäuscht!

Barack Obama has admitted he still has the occasional cigarette.

“But I figure, seeing as I’m running for president, I need to cut myself a little slack,” he said.

Quitting smoking didn’t create “huge withdrawal symptoms,” the Illinois senator said, partly because he smoked only seven or eight cigarettes a day at his peak. His wife, Michelle, pressured him to quit, he said.

Obama’s advice for those trying to kick the habit? “Eliminate certain key connections - that first cigarette in the morning, or after a meal, or with a drink,” he said. “If you can eliminate those triggers, that should help.”

People can cough because they are suffering from a cold or pneumonia, having reflux or runny nose (rhinitis). But also smokers cough a lot; yes, we are even back on our loved “old” theme smoking. But also patients with asthma cough.  I found an interesting blog extract about coughing children and their parents (http://durhamregion.typepad.com/neil_crone/2007/01/anything_but_a_.html): 

“Is there anything worse than having a kid with a cough in the house? Coughing is the worst. Frankly I’ll take a vomiter over a cougher any day of the week. With a puker, the kid hurls once, twice, maybe even three times and they’re done…wiped out and usually sound asleep. Hurling takes a lot out of you…literally and figuratively. But with a cougher, the kid will keep not only himself up but you as well. In fact, most of the time, in my experience, with a kid, you are the only one who is truly and completely unable to sleep at all. A parent is hardwired to become instantly and fully awake at the faintest sign of a child’s distress. After the first cough, you are bolt upright. But the kid, the cougher, doesn’t necessarily wake himself up. “

So there are happier and unhappier coughers….?!?

“Geschüttelt nicht gerührt” kann man in älteren James Bond Filmen hören… aber lieber geschüttelt als angezündet…. Ich habe nun wieder begonnen etwas zu rennen. Bei meiner noch nicht so harmonischen Schrittfolge und den vielleicht auch mal unebenen Wegen schüttelt es mich schon ab und zu durch. Wenn ich aber von Kollegen deswegen angezündet werden, trifft es einem härter….

Wisst Ihr, wo der steht? “Man” ist ja froh, wen der der meldet auch weiss wo und warum?!?

Das Abstimmungswochenende liegt nun schon bald zwei Wochen zurück. Die Rauchschutzinitiative (”Schutz vor Passivrauch”) wurde sowohl in Zürich als auch in Basel Stadt angenommen. Ein erster Schritt ist auch in diesen beiden Kantonen nun getan. Wir müssen uns aber weiter engagieren. Darf ich nochmals Winston Churchill zitieren:
